BCB Plans 27,000 sq ft Canopy and Solar Power System at Mirpur Stadium

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken a significant initiative to improve spectator comfort at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, alongside exploring sustainable energy solutions.

Speaking to reporters at a press conference in Mirpur, BCB ad-hoc committee chairman Tamim Iqbal announced that a canopy covering approximately 27,000 square feet will be installed over the East Gallery of the stadium. The move is aimed at reducing the discomfort faced by spectators due to excessive heat and weather exposure.

Tamim Iqbal stated that the East Gallery currently lacks any form of shade, despite being one of the most crowded sections of the stadium due to its comparatively lower ticket prices. As a result, spectators often struggle to enjoy matches under intense sunlight or during unfavorable weather conditions.

He explained that the planned canopy will cover a large portion of the gallery, allowing spectators to remain protected while still maintaining a clear view of the screen and scoreboard. According to him, the process has already begun, and the board expects visible progress in the near future.

Tamim also noted that other parts of the stadium — including Shahid Jewel Stand, Shahid Mushtaq Stand, North and South Galleries, and the Grand Stand — already have adequate coverage, which has minimized spectator discomfort in those areas.

In addition to the canopy installation, the BCB is also considering the integration of a solar power system across the stadium’s roof. The initiative aims to reduce the high electricity costs associated with operating the venue.

Tamim Iqbal mentioned that discussions regarding solar energy have taken place following suggestions from relevant authorities, including the sports ministry. He added that the plan is still in its initial stage, and a final decision will be made after assessing feasibility, investment requirements, and potential returns.

If implemented, the solar system would enable the stadium to generate a portion of its own electricity, contributing to energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.

The combined initiatives reflect BCB’s efforts not only to enhance spectator experience but also to move towards more sustainable and cost-effective stadium operations.
