The government has set an ambitious target to generate 10,000 megawatts of electricity from solar energy by 2030, aiming to strengthen the country’s energy security and accelerate the transition to renewable energy.
The announcement was made by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani during a press briefing at the Secretariat following a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
According to Nasimul Ghani, the meeting focused on the upcoming Renewable Energy Policy 2025, including strategies to encourage investment in renewable energy projects and expand the country’s clean energy capacity.
He explained that the new policy is designed to create a more attractive investment environment by simplifying entry for both public and private investors while ensuring sustainable returns.
As part of the initiative, the government plans to open up large-scale investment opportunities on state-owned land, allowing both public institutions and private entrepreneurs to participate in renewable energy projects.
The Renewable Energy Policy 2025 aims to ensure that at least 20% of the country’s electricity generation comes from renewable sources by 2030.
To support implementation, a dedicated committee has already been formed to finalize the policy framework and oversee execution. Officials stated that the committee will work দ্রুত to complete the required laws and begin implementation, acknowledging that previous plans faced challenges in execution.
The government has also introduced a new policy framework to accelerate renewable energy development by allowing unused or underutilized government land to be utilized for clean energy projects under a public-private partnership (PPP) model.
In addition to solar energy, discussions also included expanding other renewable sources such as wind and biogas, highlighting a broader strategy for energy diversification.
During the briefing, Nasimul Ghani noted that efforts are ongoing to modernize solar technologies and promote domestic manufacturing, aiming to overcome existing limitations in the sector. He also mentioned that the government is targeting to keep solar electricity tariffs between Tk 4 and Tk 8 per unit.
Alongside the energy-related decisions, the cabinet also approved observing November 7 as a public holiday marking National Revolution and Solidarity Day. Additionally, June 6 will be observed annually as National Rural Development Day, although it will not be a public holiday.
